Mr. Glenn J. Champ

Glenn Champ Biography 1908-2003

Mr. Champ was born in the Woodlawn area of Jefferson County, IL to Edward C. and Anna May Champ. He was married to Martha (Power) Champ for 72 years. His children are Martha Sue (Champ) Laughhunn, David G. Champ, and Stephen E. Champ. He was a grandfather to eight and great-grandfather to nine children. He was a member of Central City Methodist Church.

His elementary education, 1st through 6th grade (1914-1919), was at Cosner Township Grade School in Jefferson County. He then attended Centralia Central Grade School for 7th and 8th grades (1920-1921). He graduated from Centralia Township High School in 1926. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Education from Southern Illinois University in 1927.

His teaching and coaching career began at Dowell Elementary School, Dowell, IL (1927-1930).

In 1930, he became superintendent, teacher, and coach at Central City Elementary School, a position he held for 38 years (1930-1968). From 1968 through 1973, he served as assistant to the President of Kaskaskia College.

He served our community for 33 years as a member and Past President of both the Centralia Township High School Board and member and Past President of Kaskaskia College/Centralia Junior College Board (1943-1976).

For 19 years, he served as Scoutmaster of Troop #60 of Central City Elementary School and Boy Scouts of America (1930-1949). During W.W.II, he served as a board member on the Centralia War Price and Rationing Board (1942- 1946). He served as member and Past President to Centralia Community Chest (United Fund). He was a seven-year member of the Centralia Red Cross.

He was a member and Past President of the Marion County Teachers Association and also a member and Past Chairman of the Marion County Schoolmaster's Association. For 13 years, he was a member and Vice President of the Kaskaskia College Foundation Board (1965-1978). In 1965, he was given life membership to the Illinois Parent-Teachers Association.

For 16 years, he was a member of the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Board of Control.

He was a charter member of the Central City Lions Club and a lifetime member of the Centralia Masonic Lodge #201 A.F. and A.M. for over 50 years.

Description:

The following criteria are established for this award:

  • The scholarship will be given to a graduate of Central City Grade School.  Please submit proof of graduation (diploma, letter, or grade report).

  • Applicants must be enrolled full-time at Kaskaskia College.

  • A student may enroll in any course of study so long as he/she is working toward a degree or certificate.

  • Recipients must have a GPA of 2.5 or better, on a 4.0 scale.

  • Preference will be given based on a personal written essay including a statement of why the student is applying for a scholarship.  Please include personal goals, community activities, economic needs and future goals.

  • Financial needs will be a factor of consideration.

  • Participation in extra- curricular activities will be favorably considered.

  • Depending on the funds that are available, scholarship amounts will vary between $500 and $1,000 (1/2 awarded in the fall and 1/2 in the spring semesters) and will be credited to the recipient's account at Kaskaskia College and is restricted to tuition, fees, books and course related supplies purchased through the Kaskaskia College Bookstore, and childcare provided by the Kaskaskia College Children's Learning Center.

History of the Glenn Champ Scholarship
The Central City Grade School Glenn Champ Memorial Scholarship was initiated in July of 2004 with the primary goal of  helping Central City students achieve their educational goals while attending Kaskaskia College. Mr. Champ was dedicated to the education of children and he spent 38 years of his teaching career at Central City Grade School serving as an administrator, teacher and coach. He was a role model for both the children and the community of Central City.  This scholarship was initiated and funded by the Central City Pee-Wee Basketball Program in honor of Mr. Champ's lifelong dedication and commitment to Central City Grade School as well as to the Village of Central City.
