About Central City School
Welcome to Our Community
The Village of Central City has a population of around 1,200 people. Our community is located directly north of the city of Centralia and lies entirely within the boundaries of Marion County.
Central City is well known throughout our area as being a clean, safe and "tightly knit" community. We are very proud of our"small town" feel, but we are equally proud of the many amenities and conveniences that we are able to provide for our citizens.
Currently, our citizens have access to a full-time Police Force, a beautiful City Park, a small shopping mall and a highly respected K-8 Grade School.
Because of our close proximity to the city of Centralia, our citizens are also able to enjoy many of the benefits of a larger community. Residents of Central City are only minutes away from:
St. Mary's Hospital
Foundation Park (Home of Balloon Fest)
Centralia Recreation Complex
Raccoon Lake & Centralia Lake
4 beautiful & challenging Golf Courses
Centralia's Fairview Park & Public Pool
Fire Protection & Ambulance Service
U.S. Interstates 57 & 64
Banks Bowling Alley
Beautiful Carlyle Lake (20 minutes away)
Amtrak Station
Numerous restaurants, stores and attractions
Kaskaskia Jr. College
So, if you are looking for a place to live that still has that "small town" feel, The citizens of Central City are especially proud of our beautiful Elementary School. Central City School currently has around 300 students in grades K-8. Our school also offers both a Pre-K program and an Early Childhood Education program.
In 2001, Central City School underwent a complete renovation. Our students now enjoy having a fully air-conditioned school that has a spacious library with a "Reading Tree House" a fully equipped computer lab, a Band/Chorus room, and 17 spacious classrooms that are equipped with marker boards, SmartBoards and a minimum of 3 internet accessible computers.
Central City School is fully accredited by the State of Illinois and continues to be recognized as a "Spotlight School" by the Illinois State Board of Education Central
City School has met all of the AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) benchmarks established by the Federal Govemment's No Child Left
Behind (NCLB) legislation.
Due to our close proximity to the City of Centralia, the entire village of Central City lies within the boundaries of the Centralia High School District. Therefore, most Central City School graduates attend Centralia High School.
However, several of our students have chosen to attend the newly constructed "Christ Our Rock" Lutheran High School which is located about 15 minutes away from the village of Central City.
As one of 13 "feeder" schools whose 8th grade graduates attend Centralia High School, Central City school understands that we must do all we can in order to prepare our students for high school and beyond.

Central City School History
Central City School was first established in 1855.
The very first school was a one-room wooden structure located at Hardin St. & Breese St.
In 1875, the school was moved to a brick building that used to be the old German Methodist Church located on West Hardin St. between Marion St. & High St.
in 1896, our current school building was consturcted because the old building was too small.
From 1896-1900, Central City's population had doubled so Central City students had to attend 3 different locations: The current building, the old West Side brick building and Zimmerman Hall.
In 1916, two new rooms were added to the current school.
In 1936, the Old Gymnasium was added along with indoor toilets, shower rooms and the Old Stage in the gym.
In 1958, lots between the school and the south alley were purchased for a playground area.
In 1985, the New Gymnasium was built and the library and the 2nd grade classrooms were added.
In 1999, the 2nd floor of the school was condemned and closed off. Temporary buildings were used to house some students.
In 2001, the Jr. High wing was added.
